BYRON VOICES

Tahlia is the youth representative on the BYS management committee, part of Byron Girls group, was a participant in the 'It's Your Night, It's Your Life' safe party project and a much valued participant in the youth service.

Tahlia and Venus1. What has been the best experience in your life?

Probably my recent trip, with Arika, to England and Ireland. It was such an amazing adventure and I really brought us so much closer.
As well as just having an amazing time, I think I really matured and got to see and experience a few beautiful things.

2. What inspires you?

Life inspires me, everyday. All the beautiful people I have met inspire me to keep going with whatever I am doing and do even better.

3. Who would you like to meet and what would you ask them?

I would like to meet John Howard and ask him a lot of questions based around some of the decisions he made while he was in power.

4. What would you like to see happen in Byron Bay?

The YAC renovated and open by the end of the year and more all ages (drug and alcohol free) events throughout the shire.

5. When do you think a person becomes an adult and how?

I think that someone becoming an adult doesn’t come with age. It comes with them having responsibility and a good understanding about their actions and consequences.

6. What do you believe in?

Relating to a god, I don’t believe in that stuff, but I know there is something we are all created by and are all joined on a much deeper level then just having the same body parts, etc.

7. What has been the worst experience in your life?

Too personal. Sorry. But other then that, worst experience would be getting cheated on.

8. What would you like to change in the world?

Actual equality through out the world. Even though it’s all law, it’s still not in the hearts of a lot of people.
And of course stop global warming/change.

9. What’s important in a relationship?

Support between each other, respect, honesty, loyalty and LOVE.

10.  What would you like to ask me?

Interviewee to Interviewer:
What is one thing/person you could not live without?

Deb: I've just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns which made me weep and so I think I can 'live' without most things/people but then it's just
surviving. What I want is a quality of life that suits me and to have that I need my kids, my cats, peace, my friends (particularly my good woman
friends who've known each other for many years and been through many things), the great people I work with,
all the kids I work with, nature and all the birds I love to photograph ...... that's just a few, there's lots more that makes me happy.

What would you classify the most significant moment in your life (so far)?

Hmmm these are hard questions, but that's good! Probably the most significant moment was when I decided to live .... hard to explain but
when I decided to really try and do the best I can in my life, to look for the good instead of the bad, to look for the best in people instead of
worst, to try even when I thought I couldn't succeed, to try and be grateful for all that I have instead of regretting what I'd lost .... it sounds
trite but to try each day to love instead of living my life in fear of what if .....

If you were given one year to live what are the top 10 things you would need to do before the year was over?

I don't know, no-one does I don't think until you're faced with it, but maybe I would ...
1. See more of my son and daughter who both live in Sydney ... and actually their father as well.
2. Travel again to all the countries I already love and some that I've always wished I would.
3. Really try to do at least some of the things I'm still scared to do.
4. Tell people I love them everyday ..... I pretty much do that already but in case I forget.
5. Try and organise things somehow so my kids and the people I love are ok and are able to get on with their lives, not sure how I'll do that.
6. Be a lot more unspoken about the YAC not being fixed and the situation for local people ...... I wouldn't have much to lose!
7. Find someone who would love and take care of my animals when I was gone.
8. These are not in order of priority and I'm struggling to think of more things ...... make time to see the woman I love heaps more, no excuses.
9. Try to organise things so my Mum was ok because I'm pretty much all she's got, other than the grandkids.
10. Throw caution to the winds and try to resolve things with my ex (who really is my soulmate), not so we got back together but so we
were ok again and a part of each others lives.
