Village Voices
At the heart of Village Voices was storytelling, culture, healing and connection. Using narrative therapy, Indigenous cultural wisdom and youth work processes, facilitators created safe spaces for a group of young men to speak their truths.
Through dance, art, music, fishing, footy and film, the boys shared stories of challenge, courage and hope. Guided by local Elders and Indigenous leaders they reconnected with culture, Country and community—learning that resilience means remembering who you are and where you belong.
Spear making, fishing, weaving traditional fish nets, painting, dancing, photography and filmmaking were all used as ways to spark conversation and support the narrative therapy process. Shared meals grounded each session. Simple, nourishing moments that built trust and life skills. Large-scale collaborative artworks gave voice to the stories and sparked creativity.
Over time, Village Voices became a strong young men’s group focused on emotional literacy and peer connection. The boys listened deeply, named their feelings, and supported one another through shared challenges.
As part of Village Voices, video was used as a tool for narrative therapy, self expression and documentation of the many adventures. Below are 3 x videos that explore Contemporary Indigenous culture, alternative learning methods and give voice to the participants.
